Beginning in 2004, Chinese drywall was imported by more than 500 million pounds into the U.S. to support the post-hurricane housing boom. This potentially hazardous building material, also known as wallboard or plasterboard, may have been used in 100,000 homes nationally with an estimated 35,000 homes located in Florida. The Chinese drywall problem is currently under investigation by a number of entities. Among them are the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), and the Florida and Louisiana Departments of Health.
